PPLS offering Winter Break movies!

What a GREAT idea – after Christmas when some of the little ones are over their new loot from Santa and you’re trying to find some way of entertaining them – take them to the library for a movie! The Petersburg Public Library System will be offering children’s films December 28 -31 at the McKenney/Central Branch located at 137 S. Sycamore Street.

Here’s the schedule from the PPLS calendar:

December 28 – Cinderella from 10 AM to 11:30 AM

December 29 – DOUBLE FEATURE DAY! Polar Express from 10 AM to 11:30 and UP from 2 PM to 3:30 PM

December 30 – DOUBLE FEATURE DAY! Shrek the Halls from 10 AM to 11:30 and Aliens in the Attic from 2 PM to 3:30 PM

December 31 – Peter Pan from 10 AM to 11:30 AM

100 Year Old Petersburg Company Closing?

According the this story from Channel 6, Roper Lumber is closing a number of its location two weeks before Christmas. If you read the comments attached it looks like the company may have declared bankruptcy – wonder if that means the Petersburg location will also be affected. From some of the comments, there are very mixed feelings about how this was handled, my thoughts go out to those folks affected by the closures.

Suspect in local double murder ARRESTED!

Police in Washington, DC arrested Terrence Jamar Coleman, recently listed as Central Virginia’s Most Wanted, on Saturday in connection with the double murder of two women in a local rooming/boarding house. Full story from the WTVR Channel 6 website.

Pet Treat Recall

Saw this and wanted to pass it along for any dog owners – The FDA has issued an alert for all pig ear and beef hoof pet treats from Pet Carousel, due to Salmonella contamination. These treats are marketed under a variety of brand names and sold nationwide at many pet stores, groceries and retail chain stores. They are hosting the event to give residents an opportunity to meet Kevin and hear his plans as the recently elected Treasurer for the City of Petersburg. Kevin is planning to introduce transparency to the office in the form of published cash flow statements and other pertinent data that will give the public more information on the source of city revenues as well as the appropriation of funds. Regardless of how you voted during the election this is an opportunity to meet one-on-one with the Treasurer-Elect.

Busy Holiday Weekend!

This weekend is kicking off a number of fun, holiday events.

Centre Hill Mansion Holiday Open House – Saturday, December 5th and Sunday, December 6th from 10 AM to 5 PM. Admission is free and children are welcome. Centre Hill Mansion is located at 1 Centre Hill Avenue.

This year’s featured exhibition will be From Morning to Night: Domestic Service in the Gilded Age South. Developed by the Maymont Foundation, this traveling exhibition tells the story of the predominantly African American labor corps-barely a generation removed from slavery-that worked primarily in white households as cooks, maids, laundresses, nursemaids, bulters and chauffeurs.

Live entertainment,period decorations and children’s activities will be offered and light refreshments will be served. Built in 1823 as the primary residence for the Bolling family, Centre Hill contains stately examples of Federal, Greek Revival and Colonial Revival architectural features as well as a wide array of furnishings and decorative arts dating from the eighteenth to the early twentieth century.

Historic Battersea Holiday Open House – Sunday, December 6th from 1:45 PM (when Santa and Mrs. Claus arrive!!) to 5 PM. Directions to Battersea and a map can be found on this page.

There will be tours of Battersea, refreshments, a silent auction for trees, wreaths and other holiday decor. Live entertainment will include the Eveyln Quay, Renaissance Wind Band and Erving Barksdale. Click here for the program flyer.
